The Role of the District Team
“The
activities and organisation of a Rotary District shall exist solely to help the
individual Rotary Club advance the Object of Rotary . . . .”
Manual
of Procedure
Governor Michael writes
In
this my final month as District Governor, I hardly know how to begin to thank all
of you for your support and encouragement throughout the 2005-06 Centennial
Rotary Year.
For
me the year has been far more than I could ever had imagined. Almost every day
has been a learning experience. Learning just how imaginative and inspirational
clubs can be in their work for communities both home and overseas. Just imagine
being able to listen to Youth Speaks finalists, see a special needs children
playing in their own garden, taste the wonderful food cooked by the Young
Chefs, to watch the Disabled Gymnastics, to help an adult read for the first
time, talk with a palliative care nurse, to watch the enthusiasm on the faces
of those taking part in the Disabled Games. The words keep coming back; ‘it is
not what you cannot do that counts – it is what you can do that matters’.
Rotary and Rotarians are helping all that to happen in every corner of the
world. The sun never does set on those good works. Is there a downside? Yes!
that too.
During
some 74 club visits during the last 11 months I can count on the fingers of my
hands the number of times I have seen really exciting permanent advertisements
of club presence. Always, of course, a sign on the door telling everyone that
the club meets here. Rarely a sign to say it meets to plan the service work to improve
the quality of life in the community. Our perceived image that ‘we meet to eat’
is set surely in that doorway sign. In this day of modern computer technology
posters and pictures to tell our story could fill so many empty holes. We have
such a great story to tell too…..Think on.
Another
downside is those towns and localities that still prohibit ladies from joining
us in our service work. Places where the only club in the community remains
solidly as a single gender club. That cannot be in line with Rotary ideal that
each club should properly represent the community it serves. The evidence is
very clear that our ladies make a significant contribution to the caring work
of every club they join. Rotary membership can have no bars ethically,
religiously or on gender grounds. Membership should be unanimous welcome to
all. Be a proper Rotarian and make our ladies welcome by choice…..Think on.
Most
of all the upside. The honour of being your Governor has been a memorable year.
This
has been made so from the beginning because my wish that the District team
acted with commendable enthusasiam in celebrating Rotary and embraced the
theme, this they have all done and I shall be forever grateful for all the time
and effort put into making this year so
successful – it would be wrong to pick out anyone in particular, however my
thanks must go to our District Secretary Morgan, who this year has had extra
work to do…namely me!!
I
knew when I assumed office how great a privilege it was to serve as District
Governor: I did not know how great a pleasure it would be. It has been hard
work, it has been tiring, it has been frustrating, it has been time consuming;
it has been something I would not have missed for a gold watch.
It
has been an honour to serve you this year, and I will remain forever humble and
grateful for the opportunity. Thank you to everyone Jan and I have met for your
friendship, your fellowship, your kindness. Above all, on behalf of all those
who cannot thank you, thank you all for what you do.
Let
us never hesitate to ‘Lend a Hand in Celebrating Rotary and give Service Above
Self’ to those in need.
My
addresses will forever start – My Rotary friends -
Thank you so very much.
