Interact Report – May 2004

Our Interactor’s are busy entering the exam period. One club has finished for the summer, but looking forward to starting again with a new enthusiastic team in September.

Our clubs have been busy on the community and international front.

Dyffryn Interact club continues to support Douglas, an African boy, by raffles, a sponsored work of the distance he has to walk each day to fetch water. The group of teenagers from Chernobyl will be visiting Carmarthern again this summer. A number of events, including the teachers undertaking a sponsored walk to raise funds is ongoing. Aqua boxes have been completed and sent to disaster areas. A survey into ‘inequality in fair trade’ has been carried out and over 200 post cards sent to Tony Blair, giving suggestions as to ‘what he should do’. Used postage stamps have been collected for South American Missionary Society and old glasses for Vision Aid. Blackwood received recognition from RI for its support of Landmine Clearance in Colombia

To support community projects, a sponsored coastal walk, fancy dress jog, non-uniform days, sponsored aerobics, choir concerts, have raised funds. This money is being used to fund luncheon clubs, youth groups and donations to Barnardos and Ty Haven. ‘Book marks’ are being produced with an anti-litter message, by using IT and the sponsoring Rotary club judging the winning entry. Old mobile phones have raised funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital, and used stamps to support Cancer Research Wales and Guide Dogs for the Blind. Our Interactors are attending RYLA and Rotary meetings, in particular Handover.

Plans are underway for the Interact exchange in July to District 7720 (North Carolina). Response to the Interact Multi District Rally in Pickering in July has been poor. There is nothing to stop Rotarians attending, who wish to learn about Interact, with a view to starting an Interact club. I have all the details.

One Rotary club has indicated an interest to form an Interact Club as its Centenary project.

Socially our Interactors are as busy as ever – paint balling, shopping trips, visits to the cinema.

Gwenda. E. Griffiths. District Interact Officer.
