The Club that NEVER CLOSES ITS DOORS...

Inaugurated on 12th Dec.1928 and Chartered on 4th Feb.1929 with 26 Founder Members the Rotary Club of Neath has flourished over the intervening 71 years. Like the Windmill Theatre, it is the Club's proud boast that it never closed its doors, not even during WW2, and, apart from a couple of years when meetings were held in the Liberal Club, it has met at its original headquarters at the Castle Hotel, Neath.

The Club has not always seen eye to eye with higher authority, particularly at District level, and indeed in the thirties, seriously considered resigning from Rotary and becoming merely a luncheon club. Good sense prevailed, peace was made with authority, and the Club has gone on practising the highest ideals of Rotary throughout its history as exemplified by the election of one of its members, Doug Bailey, as District Governor in 1977- 78. Doug is still a regular attender and is an example to the Club.

The Club has actively supported all facets of Rotary service during its 71 years - local, national and international. A Presidential year never passes without the Club playing its part in the life of the town of Neath.

Many deserving charities and causes have been assisted both financially and in other service related ways. Internationally the links formed with the French Rotary Club of Montlucon forty five years ago have resulted in many individual and Club visits resulting in lasting friendships. A large party of our Montlucon friends joined us to celebrate our 70th Charter Dinner on 30th Jan.1999.

Of the 71 past presidents fourteen are still actively involved in the affairs of the Club and provide a wealth of experience when considering "new" projects. Remembering that "we did it in my year of office," they are able to contribute the benefit of experience, identify potential problems and enable appropriate avoidance measures to be put in place .

Club activities in the course of the last 71 years have been too many and varied to be summarised in this short history without doing an injustice to the many who have contributed so much and so well demonstrated the central Rotary principle of Service above Self.

Each new year of our existence brings new and interesting challenges and the Club looks forward to the future with enthusiasm.
