21st July 2003: St David’s Day saw the senior citizens of Pontllanfraith being entertained by pupils of Pontllanfraith Junior School, the concert was supported by the Tredegar Orpheus Choir. The audience of young and old packed the Blackwood Institute for a remarkable evening of song and dance. St David would have enjoyed the show. At the end of April, Club members attended an away day to the Welsh National Assembly building in Cardiff Bay, followed by a tour of the Brains Brewing Facitity in Cardiff, it proved to be a most enlightening experience. A joint venture with the Abercarn and Newbridge Rotary Club on Stroke Awareness Day saw over 300 people volunteer to have their blood pressure taken. Our newest member Adrian Walters arranged the Fun and Fish’n’Chips night, this proved to be an excellent evening of fellowship and also raised funds for the charity account. The annual Boxing Night was held at the Maes Manor hotel with young boxers coming from all over South Wales. This event raised over £2,000 for Polio Eradication. On Sunday the 19th May Rotarians and friends gathered in Brecon to cycle
the Taff trail to Cardiff. This event had been postponed once due to bad
weather earlier in the year, the rain was warmer this time! The objective of
this event was to top up the Polio Eradication Fund and the team of nine
cyclist did this by raising over £1,000. Young gymnastic novices of the
Cwmcarn, Heol, Vddu, Islwyn and Machen gymnastic clubs gave a display of
remarkable talent and enjoyed the inter-club competition on the 31st May.
